The 17 competencies / Lesson planning / Competency 4
ADI Part 3: adapting the lesson plan
The form asks: Was the plan adapted when it needed to be?
Adapt when the pupil is struggling, when they say the lesson isn't what they wanted, and also when they've already mastered the goal. Whatever you change, explain it to the pupil.
What earns marks
- Comparing the pupil's claims with what you actually see
- Responding to faults that undermine the plan
- Responding to the pupil's concerns
- Picking up non-verbal discomfort or confusion
What loses marks
- Sticking to the plan when the pupil is out of their depth
- Sticking to it despite faults, or after they've mastered it
- Changing the plan for no reason
- Not explaining the change
The common mistake: Freezing on the rehearsed plan because the examiner is watching. Sometimes the fix is changing how you teach, not what you teach.
