The 17 competencies / Risk management / Competency 6
ADI Part 3 directions and instructions: clear and in good time
The form asks: Were directions and instructions clear and in good time?
Any instruction, about the route or about technique, should be clear, early enough to act on, and right for this pupil. DVSA also warns that too many instructions can demotivate the pupil and become a hazard in themselves.
What earns marks
- Clear, concise directions
- The pupil understands and agrees the plan
- Timing that lets the pupil respond
- Little reliance on after-the-fact correction
What loses marks
- Confused or late directions
- Unnecessary directions
- Not noticing when your input is overloading the pupil
The common mistake: A running commentary of corrections after each mistake. Move your input earlier: prompt the mirror check before the junction, not after it.
