ADI Part 3: feedback on safety-critical incidents
The form asks: Was there enough feedback on safety-critical incidents?
After a near-miss, the pupil should understand what happened and how to avoid it. Ideally they work it out themselves, with your help, as soon as it's safe. Then check they feel able to apply what they've agreed.
What earns marks
- Stopping somewhere safe to examine the incident
- Letting the pupil express any fear or concern
- Helping them reflect and form a strategy
- Checking they can put it into practice
What loses marks
- Not examining the incident
- Leaving it too long
- Telling them the answer without checking understanding
The common mistake: Lecturing while the pupil nods. The book's five-step debrief (stop, settle, replay, plan, check) covers everything on DVSA's list.
