The 17 competencies / Teaching and learning strategies / Competency 12
ADI Part 3: using opportunities and examples
The form asks: Were opportunities and examples used?
Use real situations from the lesson to link technique to theory. DVSA's own examples include asking why mirrors matter before changing direction, and discussing how to help an emergency vehicle get through.
What earns marks
- Examples from the lesson used at a suitable time
- Examples within the pupil's experience
- Giving the pupil time to reach their own conclusion
What loses marks
- Examples the pupil can't understand yet
- Complex examples beyond their ability
- Imposing your interpretation
The common mistake: Mocking other drivers. It costs marks under manner too. Ask the pupil what the other driver could have done differently instead.
