Guides / Trainee licence
The trainee driving instructor licence
A trainee licence lets you charge for lessons while you prepare for Part 3. It lasts 6 months and costs £140.
Who can apply
You need to have passed Part 2 and done at least 40 hours of training with a qualified ADI. You don't need a new criminal record check to apply.
Key rules
- You choose option 1 (supervision) or option 2 (extra training) when you apply, and you can't switch later.
- The licence shows your training establishment; if you move driving school, you need a new licence.
- You can't be paid for lessons without a valid licence.
- A third Part 3 fail makes it invalid.
