How to become a driving instructor: the steps
You pass three tests: theory (Part 1), driving ability (Part 2) and instructional ability (Part 3). Parts 2 and 3 must be passed within 2 years of Part 1.
The steps
- Check you're eligible, and get a new DBS check.
- Apply to become an ADI, agreeing to the ADI register guide.
- Get a registered trainer.
- Pass Part 1, the theory test.
- Pass Part 2, the driving ability test.
- Optionally, get a 6-month trainee licence to teach while you prepare.
- Pass Part 3, the instructional ability test.
- Register within 12 months of passing.
After that, you'll take a Standards Check at least every 4 years and renew your registration and DBS check every 4 years.
