ADI Part 3: appropriate, non-discriminatory manner
The form asks: Was your manner appropriate and non-discriminatory?
Keep the pupil comfortable and respected, whatever their background. DVSA's list of evidence includes some surprising everyday habits, including offering a handshake.
What earns marks
- Asking how the pupil would like to be addressed
- Keeping a respectful distance
- Asking a disabled driver what you need to know
- No derogatory talk about other road users
What loses marks
- Using a first name without permission
- Touching the pupil, including handshakes, unless for safety
- Comments on appearance that don't affect driving
- Poor-quality instruction overall
The common mistake: Banter about other drivers or groups of people. Turn poor driving into a learning question instead.
