The 17 Competencies

Guides / Failing and retakes

Failed ADI Part 3? What to do next

A fail comes with a detailed report scoring you on all 17 competencies. Use it to find your weakest areas, train on them with a registered trainer, and rebook when you're ready.

First, check the rules

You can retake after a first or second fail, booked within 2 years of passing Part 1. After a third fail you must stop paid lessons, any trainee licence becomes invalid, and you retake Parts 1 and 2.

Then, read the report

Check risk management first: 7 or less fails you whatever your total. Then find your 0s and 1s, and look for a root cause, since low scores often move together.

Then, plan

Pick two or three target competencies, not all seventeen. Train on them, practise in real lessons, and rebook once a self-score shows 2 or above in those areas.
