The 17 Competencies

Guides / Part 3 essentials

How long is the ADI Part 3 test?

The lesson lasts about 45 minutes, with your pupil driving for about 40. Allow longer at the test centre for the briefing beforehand and feedback afterwards.

Before the lesson

The examiner checks your ID and insurance, then asks about your pupil: roughly how many hours of lessons they've had, any other practice, their strengths and weaknesses, and today's plan. They'll tell you what time to be back.

During

Up to 3 minutes to agree goals and risk at the start, about 40 minutes of driving, then up to 3 minutes of reflection at the end.

After

The examiner marks the test away from the car, which takes about 10 minutes, then gives you private feedback, normally around 15 minutes.
